| Porthmadog FC History
& Honours |
Founded in 1884 Porthmadog rank as one of the oldest clubs in Wales, and even more so one still playing on the same pitch. In 1897 Port lost the Cambrian Coast League to Towyn on goal difference and opted to move into the North Wales league and were champions in 1903. In the 1922-23 season an amazing four replays were needed to settle a Welsh Amateur Cup tie against Barmouth. Unhappily it was Barmouth who finally triumphed in extra time of the fourth replay at Aberystwyth! In 1927 Port won the Gwynedd League and eight years later entered the Bangor & District League followed by a move into the Lleyn & District League in 1937. During the 1952-53 season Port bought The Traeth off Tremadog Estate. But it was the 1950s which saw the club experience real success, winning the Welsh Amateur Cup in 1956 and 1957. In the 1960s Porthmadog turned professional and signed Mel Charles and featured in headline grabbing Welsh Cup runs. Some famous football names joined Charles in being associated with Port, namely John Charles, Jimmy Hinch and Tony Waddington. In the seventies trophies were won regularly, such as The Welsh League (North) in 1974 and 1976, alongside The NWCC in 19773, 1974, 1975, 1976 and 1978. One famous name from English football circles was Steve Joel who played for Port, as did Steve Woodin who represented New Zealand at International level. In recent times the club were founder members of the Cymru Alliance in 1990/91 and founder members of the LoW in 1992/93 which coincided with the installation of floodlights at The Traeth. Porthmadog have been managed by local favourite Meillir Owen, former Welsh Internationals Ian Edwards and Mickey Thomas, as well as previous boss Colin Hawkins. In 1998 Port were relegated when the LoW made the controversial decision to reduce the league in size from 20 to 18 and sent down four rather than two clubs. Port have also been associated with some of the outstanding talents in North Wales football, as both Marc Lloyd Williams and his strike partner at Bangor, Paul Roberts, came into the LoW with the Traeth club. Ground improvements have been carried out to include a new entrance, carpark, and shop/canteen facility. Porthmadog won the Cymru Alliance title in 2003 to regain their place in the Welsh Premiership with popular Anglesey personality Viv Williams at the helm. However with the WP clubs being reduced to twelve at the end of the 2009-10 season manager Tomi Morgan could not manage to keep the Traeth club in the top flight and relegationfollowed, as did Tomi's departure... His replacement was Gareth Parry who in turn moved on in June 2014 to be replaced by Barmough based Craig Papirnyk. |
