Caernarfon Town History &
Honours |
Football
clubs in Caernarfon have borne such nostalgic names as Athletic,
Ironopolis, and Colts. In 1906 Caernarfon Colts and RWF who both
played at The Oval joined forces to
form Caernarfon United. In 1937Caernarfon Town FC was formed and entered a team in the Welsh League (North) where they stayed until 1980. During this time the club won League Championship in 1947 and 1966. In 1980 Caernarfon joined the Lancashire Combination in the English system, moving to the North West Counties within a year. Such cross border movement was subject to FAW approval and a great deal of lobbying. As runners up in 1985 Caernarfon were elected to the NPL, and under experienced manager John King enjoyed a marvellous FA Cup run in 1986/87. They beat Stockport and York before losing a Third Round replay to Barnsley. King was to become Tranmere Rovers boss for several years. However names such as Steve Craven and Austin Salmon retain a place in Caernarfon folklore. In 1995 Caernarfon returned to Welsh football and a place in the LoW, finishing sixth at the first attempt and in 1996-97 achieved fourth place which remains their best to date. Sadly for The Canaries they were relegated from the LoW in 1999-2000 following a dismal season under the control of Paul Rowlands and then Dixie McNeil. However Caernarfon won the CA at the first attempt under the management of Adie Jones to reclaim their LoW status, and enhanced The Oval with a new stand and improved facilities. However he was to depart, replaced by Wrexham based Steve O'Shaughnessy who in turn left during the summer of 2008. A new Liverpool based regime was installed and Oval supporters will be interested in how they perform once the new season gets underway. Unhappily the end result was relegation and consequently Caernarfon find themselves back in the Cymru Alliance at the start of the 2009-10 season. From there the fall continued to the Welsh Alliance as some behind the scenes difficulties inevtiably had an impact on the field of play. With these seemingly resolved the club appointed Lee Dixon to the helm and in 2013 he secured promotion from the Welsh Alliance - as champions - and with it a welcome return to a very competitive looking Cymru Alliance. After a year of consolidation Caernarfon kicked off the 2015-16 season with a determination to win the league and return to the Welsh Premier. |
