Ruthin Town History & Honours |
| Football in Ruthin dates
back to 1880. That year marked arguably the greatest achievement by a team from the town when they reached the Welsh Cup Final, only to lose 2-1 to Druids. This was the third year of the competition, the match was played at The Racecourse Ground in Wrexham and the Ruthin side is listed as: H.Parry, J.Roberts, J.Halley, P.Maddocks, P.Mostyn, R.Williams, WP Owen, WH Roberts, A.Lloyd, U.Goodwin, GH Simon. Goodwin scored their solitary goal in fron of a crowd of 4000. A player of note was Williams Pierce Owen (WP Owen) who was a pupil of Friars School in Bangor who spent his playing career with Ruthin and won 12 caps for Wales between 1880-84. He was a member of the Wales eleven which won their first ever international victory, a 1-0 defeat of England at Alexnader Meadow, Blackburn in February 1881. It was Wales' eighth international and broke a run of seven straight defeats. However the present club was founded as recently as 1951. Honours include winning the North Wales Amateur Cup in 1967 and 1973. Ruthin have played much of their football in the Welsh National League (Wrexham Area) as indeed their reserves do still. In 1979 the club began to climb towards their present position by winning the Third Division and the following year completed the double of winning the Second Division and winning the League Cup. Ruthin were promoted to the Cymru Alliance in 1991-92 after finishing runners up in the Welsh National League (Wrexham Area) and winning the Premier Division Cup the same year. Ever presents since, the club are one of the league's longest serving members. The third place achieved in 2004 represents the best to date and vindicates the club's youth policy and the obvious links with local secondary school Ysgol Brynhyfryd. |
