| Buckley Town History & Honours |
Records of football being played in Buckley date back to 1860 and early matches record a team known as Belmont Swifts who later became Buckley Victoria. The team played at Mill Lane and enjoyed fixtures against local opponents including Mod Athletic, Wrexham Victoria and Rhyl Athletic. Buckley Victoria were superseded by Buckley Engineers who won The Welsh Amateur Cup on three occasions. In 1887 Buckley Town FC was formed and in 1898 won the Wirral & District League. Buckley Town joined the Welsh League North in 1925 and won the North Wales Amateur Cup in 1937. In 1949 both Buckley Wanderers and Buckley Rovers were playing competitive matches in the town. In 1956 Buckley Rovers won the Welsh League North after scoring more than one hundred goals along the way. In the early 1960s both Rovers and Wanderers played in the Welsh League North but by the 1970s it was agreed that both teams merge to form Buckley Town in 1977. In 1993 Buckley Town joined the Cymru Alliance and have been everpresent since with a constantly improving end of season position. The club moved to the current home at Globe Way for the start of the 1999-2000 season prior to which they occupied a town centre position of limited potential. Both 2001 and 2002 saw Buckley finish in fifth position in the Cymru Alliance, by 2003 they had moved up to 3rd and seemed destined to make a realistic challenge for the title in 2003-04. To this end the summer of 2004 saw work commence on introducing floodlights to provide a realistic opportunity of promotion to the Welsh Premiership. On 7th September 2004 Buckley entertained Bala in the Cymru Alliance for their first floodlit fixture at Globe Way. Buckley were Cymru Alliance champions in 2004-05 under the management of Dave Taylor but after due consideration of the ground improvements needed and expenses involved, opted to decline promotion to the Welsh Premiership. During the summer of 2007 Taylor left the club to be replaced by Simon Sedgwick and in due course locally based Gareth Thomas took over. However despite this managerial change the constant drive to improve the ground never ceases with something new to show by way of spectator facilities thanks to the hard work of the few. |
