Gresford Athletic History & Honours |
| Since relegation from
the Cymru Alliance in 1995 Gresford Athletic have gone from nearly
folding to the Welsh National Premier league champions and promotion
back to the Alliance. Founder members of the CA in 1990-91, but relegated in 1994 Gresford won the Welsh National Premier Division in 1997. In 1996-97 Gresford had won both the Premier League and Third Division of the Welsh National. They had three teams, First, Reserves and Colts. For season 1997 the Colts team was dropped and with the remaining two teams in place the new committee set about making the club viable. Local businessman Geoff Taylor became chairman, Chas Rowland returned to the club as secretary, Clive Williams, Roger Taylor, John Purdie became committee members, joining Ron Henessey who had stayed with the club through thick and thin. Dai Richards and Rob Ackerly took over the first team with Alan Jones and Ron Roden managing the Reserves. Season 2000/1 was one of the best in Gresford’s history winning the Welsh National Premier League and reaching the final for the first time of the FAW Trophy under the management of Alan Jones, Ady Roberts and Mark Evans. Off the field the club had a hard working committee of twelve men who should take a lot of praise in turning the club round from the dark days of not so long ago. The clubs playing record for the 2000-01 season reads :- Welsh National Premier League Champions, FAW Trophy Finalists, NE Wales Challenge Cup quarter finalists. Ground improvements are well under way with a new seated enclosure, two new dugouts the pitch has never looked better and the New Village Trust hall which houses the changing rooms probably the best in the area. In the 2000-01 season Phil Jones finished top scorer. Russell Pritchard made most appearances and Gareth Rowland was voted player of the season and the matchday programme was voted best in the Welsh National by the Wirral programme collectors. The 2001-02 haul of 37 points was a best yet at CA level which merited a highest ever finishing position of 11th which was improved upon in 2004-05 with 50 points and an 8th place. |
