Llanelli FC History & Honours |
|
Workers from Staffordshire who moved to Llanelli with the
Pottery industry in the latter half of the 19th century introduced
football to the rugby stronghold, and a club was established
which played on Cae Blake in the Furnace area of the town. Unfortunately
this club did not survive the fierce opposition posed by rugby
union and its supporters and ceased playing matches. However
by 1904 the club was back in existence and able to compete against
other clubs in the area. Formed in 1896 Llanelli became a professional club in 1912 and won the Welsh League in 1914. The success was gained on the Cae Flat (Penyfan) pitch. 1914 was also the year of Llanelli's only Welsh Cup Final appearance - a 3-0 defeat to Wrexham in a replay at Oswestry. In 1922 the club moved to Stebonheath where it has remained ever since, winning the Welsh League again in 1930 and 1933. Further success came in the same competition again in 1971, 1977 and 1978. In 1992 Llanelli were founder members of the LoW finishing in 14th position at their first attempt. Since this time the club has endured relegation and been promoted back; the Stebonheath Ground where it prospered under the management of maverick boss Leighton James. Despite finishing fifth in their first season Llanelli opted to sack manager Leighton James in May 2000. During the following weeks John Lewis was appointed only to be replaced by Gary Proctor late in the 2000-01 season. The club avoided relegation only because no South Wales side applied for promotion. However an investment group Jesco bought a controlling interest in the club and in the summer of 2004 declared that the team would become only the second full time outfit in the league. In 2008 this backing was richly rewarded when The Reds won a League and League Cup double, and were only denied a treble when beaten in the Welsh Cup Final. |
