Newtown FC History & Honours |
|
Football in Newtown dates back to the birth of Welsh Football,
with a Newtown side playing fixtures against the likes of
Ruabon Druids and Wrexham in the 1870s. Indeed Newtown
participated in the first ever Welsh Cup fixture against Ruabon
Druids in October 1877. Early success was gained in 1879 Welsh Cup with a Final victory over Wrexham to receive the newly commissioned Welsh Cup Trophy which is still in use today. By 1896 Newtown were competing in the Welsh League (North) against Druids, Brymbo, Rhostyllen, Westminster Rovers and Chirk. Over the years The Robins have played at a number of grounds, including "the Cunnings", "24 acres", "Racecourse Recreation Ground" and "Plantation Lane" In 1951 Newtown moved to a new ground named after local sporting hero George Latham and beat Aberystwyth Town 4-0 in the Central Wales League before a crowd of more than 1200. George Latham played for Liverpool, Stoke City and Cardiff City with whom he remained as trainer, a position he occupied during The Bluebirds historic FA Cup defeat of Arsenal in 1927. Ongoing ground improvements have been central to the development of Newtown, in 1979 floodlights were installed and opened on 24th September 1979 when the successful Second Division side Wrexham FC came to Latham Park. The home side won before a crowd of more than 1500. The Welsh Amateur Cup was won in 1955 and in 1988 the club opted to join the NPL, and with it participation in the FA Cup and Trophy. The record attendance at Latham Park is 5004 who were drawn by the visit of Swansea City in The Welsh Cup. The Swans won 9-4 with Ivor Allchurch and Cliff Jones outstanding for the visitors. In 1992 the club became founder members of the LoW and have been ever present since. During this time the club finished second in the league, gained European entry, and played against Sconto Riga of Latvia in 1996 and more recently Wisla Krakow of Poland. Off the field tremendous ground improvements have taken place which have seen Latham Park develop into the finest stadium in Mid Wales and amongst the best in the LoW. The club have staged International matches at different age levels and look to continue the improvements under the guiding hand of new Chairman Phil Trenbath. The 2004-05 season contributed to an usual treble for The Robins, their third successive tenth place finish. |
