| Llanfair United FC History & Honours |
Llanfair United was formed in September 1896 (as Llanfair Football Club) but until 1905 they played friendly rather than league matches. In 1905 Llanfair joined the Welshpool & District League and won their initial fixture in November 1905 against Powys Castle. The club moved into the Montgomery League in the 1930s and won the Montgomery Amateur League in 1947 & 1948. A notable player during that period was Flint born Trefor Owen who won six youth and eighteen amateur International caps for Wales before joining Tooting & Mitchum and in February 1958 Leyton Orient. In the 1950s and 60s Llanfair were often runners up but never quite champions. In 1966 the uniquely named Kingsley Whiffen emerged from Llanfair to play for Chelsea. The Welshpool born goalkeeper also played for Plymouth Argyle and Bangor City. The 1970s were a successful era for Llanfair. The Amateur League Cup was won in 1972 and in 1973 a treble was landed, to include the Montgomery Amateur League, Village Cup and League Cup. In 1975 they won the League once more and spent five seasons in the Spar Mid Wales League. The 1980s also yielded success. In 1984 Llanfair won the Emrys Morgan Cup, then in 1985 and 1986 they won the Montgomery Amateur League title before claiming the Emrys Morgan Cup once more in 1986. The 1990s also started well with the Amateur League Cup in 1991, and the water was muddied slightly for the next few years as two Llanfair Caereinion sides did battle, Llanfair being challenged by Llanfair Caerenion Wanderers! In 2001/02 this was resolved when the two sides merged to form Llanfair United. In 2010-11 the club joined the newly formed Spar Mid Wales Division Two which they won in 2013. The following season, 2013/14 was another filled with success with five trophies landed, to include Central Wales Cup (First Team), Montgomeryshire Amateur League (Reserves), North Powys Ladies League and League Cup (Ladies) and the Mid Wales Youth League (Youths). This was bettered though a year later with a first ever Spar Mid Wales League championship earning promotion to the Cymru Alliance, the second tier of Welsh football, along with the likes of Caernarfon Town and Prestatyn who were in Europe so recently. |
