| Colwyn Bay History & Honours |
| Football in Colwyn Bay dates back to 1881 and joined the North Wales Coast Football League some twenty years later. In 1907 the club was known as Colwyn Bay United and moved to the Welsh National League in 1921 after the Coast Football League closed down. After winning the League Cup a couple of times - and reaching the semi finals of the Welsh Cup in 1929-30 they won the newly formed North Wales Football League in 1930-31 and moved on to the Birmingham League. This was a very competitive level of football with the likes of Wrexham Reserves, KIdderminster Harriers and Bangor City involved. But the travelling costs proved unbearable and in 1937 after finishing bottom twice in successive seasons they joined the Welsh League (North) in 1937. The second World War put a halt to organised football but in 1946 they were runners up in the first season of post war competition and established themselves in North Wales football. Some fourty years of league and cup success followed with victories in the Cookson, Alves and Barrit Cups. In 1984 Colwyn Bay again looked across the border and joined the North West Counties League and moved from Eirias Park to have greater control over their own destiny at Llaneilian Road. By 1987 the club had reached the First Division of the NWCL under the guidance of Bryn "The Butcher" Jones who was a well known personality in North Wales football circles. In 1991 Colwyn Bay were elected into the Northern Premier League after finishing runners up in the NWCL but clouds were gathering as the FAW looked to clubs to join the newly formed League of Wales. Whilst Bangor City and Newtown accepted the pressure to join, Colwyn Bay, Caernarfon and Rhyl opted to play in exile in pursuit of their non league ambitions. Ironically they were promoted as champions of the Northern Premier League First Division to the Premier League at the time that Bangor played their final season in non league football. Long serving manager Bryn Jones stepped down in 2001 to be replaced by former centrehalf Colin Caton, and soon after Peter Davenport. Other managers came and went but in 2011 under the guidance of Neil Young the club reached the play offs, beat FC United in the final, and reached the Conference North, two steps away from the Football League. Colwyn Bay spent four notable seasons in the Conference North playing against some big non league - and former Football League - clubs but in 2015 were relegated in what became an unstappable slide down the pyramid. During the summer of 2019 news broke that the club had applied to join the Welsh system and were granted a place in the Cymru Alliance, then rebranded as the JD Cymru North. |
