| Port Talbot Town History &
Honours |
Formed in 1901 Port Talbot played in the Swansea Senior League and in the 1920s the Port Talbot & District League. In the 1950s the club were playing in the Welsh League Division Two Western Section, by 1984 Port Talbot Athletic were included in the National Division. It was not until 1997 that Dai Rees was appointed manager with Craig Duggan his assistant. A year later, driven by new chairman Andrew Edwards, the club established a three year plan to improve facilities off the field and achieve LoW status. This was realised at the end of the 1999-2000 season as Port finished runners up to Ton Pentre and promotion to the LoW. In the summer of 2001 the club name was changed to Port Talbot Town. The renamed club reached the semi-finals of the Welsh Cup in 2003-4 for the first time. Manager Mark Jones left for Carmarthen and there were discussions with close local rivals Afan Lido regarding a possible merger, but this was not agreed. There followed a period of steady improvement with Port Talbot finishing in the top six in both 2005-06 and 06-07. But perhaps the best news for Port Talbot was the return of manager Mark Jones in December 2008 after a break from football with Carmarthen Town. However by Christmas 2012 Mark Jones had gone and Scott Young appointed in his place. He was followed by Scott Young and then Jarred Harvey before Bernard McNally took up the reigns in November 2014. Not long after McNally moved on and that opened the door for Andrew Dyer. |
