Bala Town History & Honours |
Football
in Bala can be
traced back to the 1880s, to a time when two teams known as
Bala North End and Bala South End were replaced by a team called Bala
Thursdays. In the 1900s a team known as Bala Press Team was
established and won the Dolgellau Cup and Cambrian Coast
League. The history of Bala is one which shows how they overcame
their rural location by switching leagues to move the club forward. The Bragby Cup came into existence in the early 1930s to be competed for by local clubs. Earliest league records suggest Bala played in the Welsh National League Division Two East in the 1921-22 season. Bala played their matches as Castle Park where in 1946 they encountered Shrewsbury Town - then of the Midland League - and held the Shropshire side to a one all draw. In the early 1950s Bala moved to the adjacent Maes Tegid where they have remained since. From 1950 to 1954 they again played in the Welsh National League. Bala rejoined the Cambrian Coast League in 1954 and finished runners up in 1958, going one better in 1959 whilst also wining the League Cup and Mid Wales Cup for an impressive treble. In 1961 they again finished as runners up before winning the championship in 1963. Bala returned to the Welsh National League in 1963-64 were they remained for nearly 30 years. Bala were Division Two champions in 1968 and duly promoted to Divison One. They remained in that division for 20 years until relegated in 1988. The old Division One had now been retitled the Premier Division and were to return back to this top flight in 1990 but were promptly relegated in that first season and sank further to the Second Divison in 1993. The current rise of Bala Town can be traced back to 1996 when Bala won the Second Division and then in 1998 a Welsh National League Division One championship and promotion to the Premier Division. A couple of seasons of consolidation ensued with finishes at tenth and then fifteenth before signs of improvement in 2001 with a fifth place. Bala Town appointed manager Colin Caton during the summer of 2003. His mission was a simple one, win the Welsh National League and secure promotion to the Cyrmu Alliance. Caton duly did this with a team built around his Colwyn Bay contacts but also including "guest" players such as Kenny Burgess and Gary Roberts who had signed on second forms from Welsh Premiership sides. The first season at Cymru Alliance level ended with a creditable fourth place, then seventh but runners up positions in 2007 and 2008 suggested that Bala are very much the team to beat in 2008-09. So it proved as Caton's side clinched the title from chief challengers Hoyhead Hotspur and secured promotion to the Welsh Premier for the first time. No sooner had they done so than the WP was reduced to twelve clubs. Bala obtained a high enough finish to ensure they "made the cut" to take their place in the new league from August 2010. And in 2013 Bala won a European play off match against Bangor to qualify for the Europa League for the first time. |

Manager:
Colin Caton |
||||||||||||||||||
![]() A rugged uncompromising centre half for Colwyn Bay who took over the managerial reigns at the Unibond club, Colin Caton is a well respected figure in North Wales football. Colin spent most of his playing career with Colwyn Bay but always kept his links with "domestic" football via his local side Ruthin Town. His decision to leave the Unibond side in favour of Bala Town has had a massive impact on the ambitious lake side club who achieved their goal of promotion to the Welsh Premier league at the end of the 2008-09 season and begin 2011-12 alongside all those fighting for a place in the new top six of the twelve club league. In 2012-13 Colin guided Bala to a UEFA play off success and set up Europa Cup clashes with Levadia Talinn. The success continued and in both 2014-15 and 2015-16 Bala finished second in the league, effectively the best of the part timers. |
