    Rhayader Town History & Honours

The history of football in Rhayader is a series of births and rebirths, of clubs appearing and disappearing, often under slightly different names but all having a strong association with the oldest town in Mid Wales.
Records of football being played in Rhayader date back to 1884 with a draw against local rivals Newtown.
During the 1890-91 season Rhayader competed in the Welsh Cup and Hereford Cup whilst otherwise thought to be playing friendly fixtures rather than regular league matches.
Whilst still active in the Welsh Cup for many years it was the mid 1920s that records of regular league competition can be confirmed. In 1925-26 Rhayader competed in the Mid Wales Section of the Welsh National League. After a couple of seasons the club disappeared only to return in 1938 to play in the Mid Wales League (South) and finish fourth of the five teams.
After the war, in 1947 a club re-surfaced yet again, this time as Turfs Rhayader. By the late 1960s Rhayader were competing in the Mid Wales League and won The Radnorshire Cup in 1967.
Without doubt the formation of the Cymru Alliance and then LoW proved a catalyst for the Mid Walians who joined the CA in 1992 and led to the championship in 1997 and promotion to the Welsh Premier under the management of Richard Cross.
However in 2002 they were relegated to the CA and in July 2006 the club folded following poor support during a season in the Spar Mid Wales League. A year later the club reformed and began the climb to the CA once again for the commencement of the 2010-11 campaign.

Manager: Dylan McPhee
A battling midfielder whose appointment as manager heralded the club's rise to CA level, Dylan is better known as a player with a host of local clubs.
However he spent four seasons with his home town side Rhayader before embarking on a career which took in Carmarthen, Newtown and Caersws and totalled 150 Welsh Premier appearances. He also found time to play cricket at a competitive level.
Dylan faces a tough test in this newly revamped Cymru Alliance but he will not lack for application as the mid Wales outfit look to take on fallen giants Rhyl and co.
