Cefn Druids History & Honours

Cefn Druids was created in 1992 from a merger of Cefn Albion and Druids United.  But the real history of the new club lies in both parent clubs, in particular Plasmadoc FC which was formed in 1869.
In 1872 local Ruabon clubs Rovers and Volunteers were amalgamated to from a new club called Ruabon Druids under the guidance of Llewellyn Kenrick of Wynn Hall, Ruabon.  In 1876 the newly formed Druids became the first Welsh club to enter the FA Cup, but before their match with Shropshire Wanderers could take place the Ruabon side withdrew.  The 1887-88 season saw the launch of a new competition to be known as The Welsh Cup, the Druids took part in the first ever match at Newtown on 13th October 1887, just a week after playing Scottish giants Queens Park at Hampden Park!
The Druids won the Welsh Cup eight times in a 25 year span, notably 1880, 81, 82, 85, 86,98, 99, and 1904!  The beaten opponents reflected the nature of football during those early years; Ruthin, Northwich, Newtown White Star and Wrexham amongst others.
The Welsh Amateur Cup was won in 1903, but the era of success was coming to an end.  The next success was in 1957 when the club reached the final of The Welsh Amateur Cup.  In 1967 Cefn Albion was formed and they won the Welsh National League Third Division in 1970, and then the First Division Championship in 1980 and 81.
The new club was formed in 1982 and a new chapter in the life of both clubs opened, with immediate success in 1993, including the Welsh National League Championship, the NEWFA Cup and Presidents Cup.
As Cymru Alliance Champions in 1999 Cefn Druids, now renamed under a lucrative sponsorship with Flexys, joined the the LoW.    During the summer of 2001 long serving - and very successful boss - Gareth Powell stepped down to be replaced by Steve O'Shaughnessy whose local roots should serve the club well.
During the summer of 2003 The Druids announced an arrangement with NEWI, the Wrexham based College, that saw the name of the club changed to NEWI Cefn Druids.  This partnership designed to offer footballing opportunities for NEWI students whilst increasing the resources available to The Ancients.
In September 2010 Cefn left their long term home at Plaskynaston and moved to the excellent Rock stadium.

Manager:  Huw Griffiths

Former Wrexham youngster who played for The Druids before joining Banogr City as a no nonesense centre half.
Huw went on to make more than a hundred league appearances before a serious knee injury cut short his playing career and hastened a move into coaching and management.
When former Bangor team mate Simon Davies was appointed Chester manager he introduced Griffiths as his assistant. When the floundering border club imploded both departed with Huw resurfacing as manager of Welshpool Town following the departure of Tomi Morgan.  That also proved a difficult experience on a stingingly mean budget and with 'Pool relegated a local manager was sought - which freed the likeable Griffiths to take up the reigns at Plaskynaston.
