    Berriew History & Honours

Football has been played in Berriew since the 1800'S and has always been a very popular sport in the area. The first game's on record in Berriew was Berriew v Garthmyl on Good Friday 1899 and Berriew v Chirbury in 1905. Until the Second World War most fixtures featuring Berriew appear to have been either friendlies or cup games.
From 1946-1962 Berriew played in the Montgomeryshire Amateur League winning the Village Cup in 1955 and the League in 1960.
In 1962 the club entered the Mid-Wales League in which all major clubs in the area played at that time. An ex-professional footballer George Antonio who previously played for Stoke City among other top clubs was appointed as player/manager and under his guidance Berriew won the league in 1965 and the League Cup in 1966. When he finally retired in 1968 the famous Stanley Matthews played in Berriew in a Testimonial match for him.
The club returned to the Amateur league in 1982 and during the next decade several trophies were won. This included the most decorated season in 1987-1988 when the League Championship, the League Cup and the Village Cup were all won.
Since 1993 Berriew have played in the Mid-Wales league, with a reserve team recently being formed in the Montgomeryshire Amateur League. Berriew also have a thriving junior section with teams in various age groups. The recent years have seen Berriew First Team finish high up in the Mid Wales League, challenging for promotion to the Cymru Alliance and the Reserve Team chasing for promotion to League One of the Amateur League.
Over the years players gaining international recognition include Pryce Jones, Dennis Evans and Colin Jones who all played at Welsh Schoolboy level.
