   Welshpool Town
  History & Honours
Welshpool Town was formed in 1878 but adopted such colourful names as Welshpool Wanderers and Welshpool Warriors - although the latter may have been a separate club.  The club reformed as Welshpool AFC in 1889 after one season as Welshpool United and briefly flirted with the Shropshire League.
After the First World (Great) War Welshpool competed in the Central Wales leagues winning the Central Section in 1921.  Four years later in 1925 the club stepped up to the First Divison (North) after finishing as runners up to Llanidloes Town.
After the Second World War Welshpool moved to the Welsh National League (Wrexham area).  Success followed including Welsh National League Champions 1955, 1956, 1962 & 1965.  The club then returned to the Mid Wales League which it won seven times between 1968-80, as well as The Welsh Amateur Cup in 1972.
In 1990 Town were founder members of the Cymru Alliance, finishing second in 1993 and again in 1996.  The second occasion Champions Oswestry Town were not eligible for promotion, Welshpool took their place in the LoW instead.  The 1997 finish of 17th was to prove the best to date, the following season the club were relegated to the Cymru Alliance, their current competition.
The club finished third in 2001 and then champions in 2002 and carried out sustantial ground improvements to return to the LoW for the start of the 2002-03 season.  The club are thought to be considering a move away from the shared facility which hinders progress due to the local cricket team.
Controversially reprieved from relegation in 2003 after the clubs vote in their favour was initially overturned by the "golden share" vote of the FAW.  After a slightly better season in 2003-04 manager Russ Cadwallader was sacked to be replaced by much travelled Aberystwyth based Tommy Morgan.  Talk of an improved budget and big money approaches to WP suggest better times ahead for the Powys side.

Manager:  Tommy Morgan

Tommy Morgan was appointed manager during May 2004 after the departure of Russ Cadwallader.
Morgan is a well known and vastly experienced character whose lengthy playing career centred on Aberstwyth but also included an Indian summer with Llansantffraid.  He moved into management with varying degrees of success, culminating in dismissal by Carmarthen during the 2003-04 season.  The Welshpool job has proved a difficult one for most manager so far, it remains to be seen how he will fare from his Mid Wales base.
