Rhyl FC History & Honours |
| Former in
1883 Rhyl have enjoyed a colourful history and played in a
wide variety of competitions. One of the club's first honours was won as Welsh National League Champions in 1925 and Cup winners in 1926. Success also came in the NWCFA Cup, won in 1928, 1930, 1933, 1934, 1935, 1939, and again after the war in 1948, 1949 and 1950, the Cheshire League Championship was won in 1948 and 1951. The greatest success came in 1952 and 1953 when the Welsh Cup was won in successive seasonsbeating Merthyr and Chester respectively in the final. For good measure the NWCFA Cup was again won in 1953, 1954, and 1955. The Cheshire League Champinship followed again in 1971 and the NPL Presidents Cup in 1985. With the developments in Welsh domestic football in the 1990s Rhyl were Cymru Alliance Cup Winners in 1993 and the next season promoted to the LoW where they have remained since. 1993 also saw the club reach The Welsh Cup Final but suffer defeat against Cardiff City. Towards the tail end of the 1999-2000 season local businessman and former Rhyl forward Peter Parry expressed an interest in financing the club. This led to the departure of manager Adie Jones and the introduction of Brian Kettle, along with numerous behind the scenes changes. Again there were changes as Kettle was replaced by Lee Williams who steered the club to their highest ever finish. In May 2002 John Hulse took over and by May 2003 had steered the club to a League Cup success and sixth place in the Welsh Premier. In 2004 the club achieved an astonishing run which saw them win the WP Championship, The Welsh Cup & League Cup. However now sooner had Skonto Riga ended their UEFA ambitions than it was revealed that leading goalscorer Andy Moran had been caught with Nandrolone levels 55 times those acceptable in his blood. After guiding The Lilywhites to third in the league manager John Hulse decided to stand down at the end of the 2007-08 season and was replaced by Alan Bickerstaffe, although by common consent his assistant Osian Roberts may hold sawy. |
