Airbus UK Broughton History & Honours |
| Formed in
1946 the works team of the Aerospace giant have been variously
known as de Havilands, Hawker Siddeley, British Aerospace
and BAE Systems. In keeping with the variety of names,
Airbus have competed both in England - in the Chester & District
League - and Wales as befits as club located close
to the border town of Chester. In 1992 the Welsh National League (Wrexham area) Second Division title was won after a remarkable season which culminated in 28 wins from 34 matches, 130 goals scored and a 19 point margin over second placed Gresford Athletic reserves. Following four seasons in the First Division a runners up place to Wrexham colts in 1996 resulted in promotion to the Premier Division. After four further seasons in the Premier Division which firstly produced anothers runners up slot - this time to Corwen - in 1999 and then in 2000 Champions ahead of Penycae and with it promotion to the Cymru Alliance. This elevation co-incided with the change of name from the familiar British Aerospace to Airbus UK. They are now in their third season in the Cymru Alliance and have carried out ground improvements at the Broughton ground which lies in the shadow of the aircraft factory which generated the various names mentioned. The 2001-02 season saw Airbus UK finish in a creditable 8th position, their best to date, but one upon which they improved the following season to finish 5th. However in May 2004 The Planemakers were promoted as champions of the CA into the Welsh Premiership under the shrewd management of Airbus worker Rob Lythe. Initial plans to groundshare with Conwy United were put in place to allow for the construction of retractable floodlights required as the playing area borders the nearby airfield. |
