Aberystwyth Town History & Honours |
|
Aberystwyth Town was formed in October 1884 at a meeting
in the Belle Vue Royal Hotel. By 1899 they had joined the North Wales Combination. In 1900 Aber won the Welsh Cup beating The Druids 3-0 in The Final at Newtown on 16th April 1900 with a team built around the legendary Welsh goalkeeper LR Roose. After the First World War Aber joined Mid Wales League and were champions from 1922-28 inclusive. They were champions again in 1932 and 1933, in 1931 and 1933 they won the Amateur Cup. After the Second World War Aber played in the Welsh National League (South) and in 1970 the Welsh Amateur Cup was won. The crowds at Park Avenue were often over 3000 strong to watch Black & Greens sides featuring t Mal Reeves, Orig Williams and Arthur Lunn whose son Phil was to become a Bangor City legend. In 1986 and 1986 the Welsh Intermediate Cup was won under the management of Meirion Appleton whilst the club was still in the Central Wales League. From 1987 to 1992 Aber played in the Abacus League competing largely against South Wales based opposition, finishing fourth at the first attempt and then runners up on three successive occasions. In 1992 the club was a founder member of the newly formed LoW where they have remained since, representing Wales in Europe in 1999 after finishing in fourth position. If ever one club has benefitted from the LoW perhaps it is Aber with their Cardigan Bay coastline location which made participation in the English pyramid a near impossibility. Aber have continued to develop their Park Avenue stadium with the impressive Dias Stand (pictured above) recently opened and with the ambitious Don Kane very much in the driving seat progress - on and off the field - is very likely. |

Appointed
manager in November 2005 to replace David Burrows whose first season had
promised so much. Aber have turned to experience in the shape of former Newtown and Cwmbran manager Coyne who knows the Welsh Premiership scene inside out. Shrewsbury based but not afraid of travelling, Brian Coyne will not be hindered by the local players restriction often reported to be a handicap for previous Park Avenue managers. During the summer of 2008 the shrewd Coyne appeared to strengthen his Aber squad and should be set for a promising season. |
